At Geitgey’s Amish Country Furnishings, we want to keep you in the loop about some recent changes that have a direct impact on the crafting of our bedroom furniture, specifically in response to the STURDY Act.

Why it Matters:

The primary goal of the STURDY Act is to enhance the safety of your home, focusing on preventing tip-over-related injuries involving clothing storage units such as dressers and chests. This legislation represents a significant stride in minimizing tip-over injuries, particularly among children, by introducing and enforcing new safety standards. Our dedicated builders are actively integrating these standards into our furniture designs.

What You Need to Know:

Below are specifics of the revised standards mandated by the STURDY Act. These regulations are purposefully designed to ensure the utmost protection for children against tip-over-related injuries or fatalities.

Key Features of the Revised Standards:

The standards outline thorough safety enhancements, including testing procedures and mandatory warning requirements, such as…

  1. Simulated Weight Testing: Tests that simulate the weight of children up to 60 pounds, ensuring that the furniture can withstand realistic scenarios.
  2. Real-World Simulations: Objective, repeatable, reproducible, and measurable tests or series of tests that simulate real-world use. This includes accounting for impacts on clothing storage unit stability resulting from placement on carpeted surfaces, drawers with items, multiple open drawers, and dynamic force.
  3. Inclusive Testing: Testing of all clothing storage units, including those 27 inches and above in height, ensuring a comprehensive approach to safety.
  4. Warning Requirements: Warning requirements based on ASTM F2057-19, or its successor at the time of enactment. The CPSC reserves the right to strengthen these warning requirements if reasonably necessary to further protect children from tip-over-related incidents.

The scope of the STURDY Act extends to specific furniture categories, including:
